Foreign Research Internships of Conservatory Doctoral Students

2024–2025 academic year

Anastassiya Martynova

Anastassiya Martynova, a second-year doctoral student in the educational program "8D02102 – Instrumental Performance" (academic supervisor Vitaliy Shapilov, dissertation: "Performance Interpretation of Violin Works by Kazakh Composers in the Second Half of the 20th Century – Early 21st Century") is undertaking a research internship at the partner institution – the A. K. Glazunov Petrozavodsk State Conservatory (Russia, Petrozavodsk) from October 12 to October 31, 2024, under the guidance of international research advisor Nataliya Khilko, PhD in Arts.

During the internship, Anastasiya will conduct research focused on an in-depth study of performance features of violin works by Kazakh composers.

  


Azamat Imanbayev, Yaroslava Krementsova, Dinara Tokmurziyeva

From October 5 to 27, 2024, second-year doctoral students of the Kurmangazy Kazakh National Conservatory enrolled in the educational program "8D02102 – Instrumental Performance" – Azamat Imanbayev (academic supervisor: Galiya Begembetova, dissertation topic: "Writings for Saxophone in the Works of Kazakh Composers: History and Performance Practice"), Dinara Tokmurziyeva (academic supervisor: Gulnar Abdirakhman, dissertation topic: "Piano Cycle in the Works of Kazakh Composers"), and second-year doctoral student of the educational program "8D02101 – Musicology" Yaroslava Krementsova (academic supervisor: Tamara Dzhumalieva, dissertation topic: "Opera Classics in the Context of Contemporary Theater Trends") are conducting a research internship at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music (Budapest, Hungary).

The doctoral students attend lectures by their foreign academic advisor, Dr. László Stachó, and concerts of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s music as part of the Academy's festival. Dr. Stachó also organized a city tour for the students, introducing them to museums and concert halls in Budapest.

     


Togzhan Moldalim

Togzhan Moldalim, a third-year doctoral student in the educational program "8D02123 – Art Management" (academic supervisor: Damir Urazymbetov) completed an international research internship at ESCP Business School (London, UK) from August 27 to September 13, 2024). Under the guidance of foreign academic advisor Professor of Marketing, PhD Chloe Preece, T. Moldalim worked on her dissertation focused on the management of choreographic art in Kazakhstan and participated in the 21st International Colloquium on Arts, Heritage, Nonprofit and Social Marketing at the National Robotarium, Heriot-Watt University (Edinburgh, Scotland) with a presentation titled "Qazaq Ballet Creative Lab as a Means of Promoting the Choreographic Art of Kazakhstan.”

Additionally, the doctoral student visited various educational institutions, libraries, and museums in London, studying principles of creative management in these institutions, and conducted interviews with representatives of the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance.

     


2023–2024 academic year

Aliyar Otetleu

Aliyar Otetleu, a third-year doctoral student in the educational program "8D02102 – Instrumental Performance" (academic supervisor Arman Tleubergenov, dissertation topic: "Pianism in Global Popular Culture: Specifics of Professional Competencies"), completed a research internship at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music (Budapest, Hungary) from March 12 to 31, 2024. The internship was supervised by foreign academic advisor, Professor László Stachó.

During the internship, A. Otetleu worked on various aspects of his dissertation topic. The program included attending jazz piano classes by Academy professor Károly Binder, participating in jazz concerts at the Budapest Jazz Club, including performances by János Egri and Bela Horvath Jr. (jazz ensemble led by Balázs Varga), and actively taking part in jazz concert programs. Additionally, he conducted interviews with these musicians.

   


Balzhan Junussova

Balzhan Junussova, a third-year doctoral student in the educational program "8D02104 – Traditional Music Art" (academic supervisor Saule Utegaliyeva), successfully completed a research internship from November 1 to December 1, 2023, at the Russian Institute of Art History in St. Petersburg. This internship was focused on in-depth research for her dissertation "The Kazakh Prima-Kobyz and Similar Bowed Chordophones in the Musical Cultures of the Kyrgyz and Uzbeks.”

Under the guidance of foreign academic advisor Dinara Bulatova, Senior Researcher in the Instrumentology Department, B. Junussova prepared a report for the II International Conference "Development Paths of Domestic Instrumentology: Ideas, Methods, Destinies, Prospects," held on November 28, 2023. In her presentation, she detailed her research findings on the history and modern trends in the use of the prima-kobyz and other bowed instruments in the musical traditions of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan.

    


Asset Jumabayev

Asset Jumabayev, a second-year doctoral student in the educational program "8D02104 – Traditional Music Art" (academic supervisor Aizhan Berdibai, dissertation topic: "The Dombra Section in the Kazakh Folk Instruments Orchestra: Issues of History, Theory, and Practice"), completed a research internship at the Russian Institute of Art History in St. Petersburg from November 1 to 30, 2023. The internship was supervised by foreign academic advisor Dinara Bulatova, Senior Researcher in the Instrumentology Department, PhD in Arts.

As part of the internship, A. Jumabayev prepared a report on "The Dombra Section in the Kazakh Folk Instruments Orchestra: Past and Present" for the International Scientific Conference "Development Paths of Domestic Instrumentology: Ideas, Methods, Destinies, Prospects. Formation of National Scientific Schools in Ethno-Organology," which was presented on November 28, 2023, at the institute. Additionally, he attended the Russian Institute of Art History International Conference "Orlovskiye Chteniya" as a listener.

  


Irina Gavrilenko

Irina Gavrilenko, a third-year doctoral student in the educational program "8D02102 – Instrumental Performance" (academic supervisor Aizada Nussupova), completed a research internship at the A. K. Glazunov Petrozavodsk State Conservatory (Russia) from October 1 to 30, 2023. The internship was supervised by foreign academic advisor Irina Kopossova, PhD in Arts, Associate Professor, and Head of the Music Theory and Composition Department.

During the internship, I. Gavrilenko worked with valuable sources recommended by her research advisor in the conservatory’s library. She also attended lectures by prominent musicologists, including topics such as "Musical Forms of the 20th Century," "History and Theory of Musical Forms," and "Theory of Contemporary Composition."

  


2022–2023 academic year

Aizhan Kalibayeva

Aizhan Kalibayeva, a third-year doctoral student in the educational program "8D02101 – Musicology" (academic supervisor Valeriya Nedlina; dissertation topic: "Universality of Creative Activity of Contemporary Musicians (Based on the Example of Kazakh Composers)"), completed a research internship from March 1 to March 31, 2023, at the University of Music and Performing Arts (MDW) in Vienna, Austria.

Under the guidance of her foreign academic advisor, Dr. Marco Kölbl, PhD, Head of the Folk Music and Ethnomusicology Studies Department, A. Kalibayeva made significant progress. She revised the second section of her dissertation, focused on women composers in Kazakhstan, and presented her main findings at the seminar "Gender in Ethnomusicology." Additionally, she submitted an article titled "Gender Statistics and Cultural Prerequisites for Gender Equality of Kazakh Composers" to the international peer-reviewed journal MilleFolklore and compiled a list of 68 significant international studies related to her research topic.

  


Shyngys Kurmankulov

Shyngys Kurmankulov, a third-year doctoral student in the educational program "8D02104 – Traditional Music Art" (academic supervisor Aliya Sabirova; dissertation topic: "Performance Interpretation of the Oral Tradition on the Example of Bukeyev Kui"), completed a research internship from September 26 to October 26, 2022, at the Institute of Art Studies of the Academy of Sciences in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, in an online format due to COVID-19 restrictions.

The internship focused on an in-depth study of performance interpretation of the oral tradition, specifically Bukeyev Kui. Under the guidance of foreign academic advisor Dilorum Faizullo Kizi Karomat, PhD, DSC, Sh. Kurmankulov explored a rich collection of archival materials and audio recordings of oral musical traditions held at the Institute of Art Studies. He also attended online lectures and seminars conducted by leading experts in ethnomusicology and performance studies, significantly enhancing his knowledge and understanding of the research topic.
